Two of the defining voices of 1990s alternative rock are teaming up for a co-headlining run this fall. Liz Phair and Sleater-Kinney have announced "The Flannel and The Fury," a 10-date US tour kicking off September 6 in El Cajon, California, with stops at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, Salt Shed in Chicago, and BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! in New York before wrapping September 21 at MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston.
The tour name is a direct nod to the female-fronted bands who carved out space on center stages during the Riot Grrrl era and the broader alt-rock explosion of the early '90s — a period when both acts emerged and helped reshape what guitar music could sound like when women were driving it.
The Flannel and The Fury is a nod to 1990s alt-rock culture and the female-fronted bands who staked their claim to center stage in a male-dominated music industry. Sleater-Kinney and I both cut our teeth in the early Riot Girl scene. It's been a dream of mine ever since to bring our music and our fans together for one night of reckless hope and musical splendor.
For those of us who listened to Exile in Guyville on repeat in 1993, Liz Phair has always been a leader and a truth-sayer for the female experience. She's a legend and a stone cold classic; what a thrill to share the stage with one of our biggest inspirations — we can't wait to tear it up with her.
For Phair, this tour continues a stretch of renewed activity. Her most recent full-length, Soberish, arrived in 2021 and marked her first album in over a decade. She celebrated the 30th anniversary of her landmark debut Exile in Guyville in 2023, a record that remains one of the most brutally honest documents of its era. The prospect of hearing cuts from that album alongside Sleater-Kinney's catalog of wiry, propulsive rock is the kind of pairing that festival bookers dream about.
Sleater-Kinney, meanwhile, have stayed characteristically busy. Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker released their most recent record, Little Rope, in 2024, and earlier this year the duo formed a Ramones covers band called The Return of Jackie and Judy with Fred Armisen — a detour that suggests they're in a loose, creatively adventurous headspace heading into this tour.
