Broken Social Scene are back, and they brought everyone. Remember the Humans, the Toronto indie-rock supergroup's sixth studio album and first new record in nearly nine years, arrives May 8 via Arts & Crafts. The band has also announced the All the Feelings Tour — a joint North American run with Metric and Stars that kicks off in Austin on June 8 and closes with a massive hometown show at Toronto's RBC Amphitheatre on August 7.
The album reunites the core BSS lineup of Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Emily Haines, Feist, Amy Millan, and a rotating cast of the Toronto indie scene's best musicians with producer David Newfeld, who helmed You Forgot It in People and the self-titled album. Those records are two of the most essential Canadian indie rock documents of the 2000s. Returning to Newfeld after nearly two decades isn't just nostalgia — it's a statement about identity.
Lead single 'Not Around Anymore' is out now. It's the kind of sprawling, layered song that BSS has always made look effortless: guitars and vocals and horns all jostling for space without ever feeling crowded. The song captures what the band has always done best — the specific feeling of a large group of people making something that sounds somehow intimate.
Nine years is a long time. Hug of Thunder, the 2017 predecessor, was one of the best rock albums of that year; subsequent releases were limited to the Let's Try the After EPs and the Old Dead Young rarities comp. The gap has left fans in a holding pattern. Remember the Humans — the title alone has the weight of a manifesto for a certain kind of art-rock idealism that's felt increasingly rare.
