Bloc Party have announced a new album, Anatomy of a Brief Romance, and shared its first single, Coming on Strong. The record is due September 11 via Contagious Ltd. and Virgin Music Group, and it arrives as the London band’s first full-length since 2022’s Alpha Games.
The headline detail is not just that Bloc Party are back. It is that they are coming back with Trevor Horn producing, which is a strange and potentially useful pairing: a band whose best songs always felt like nerves firing too fast, working with a producer associated with high-definition pop architecture and 1980s studio spectacle. Consequence notes Horn’s history with Grace Jones, Pet Shop Boys, and Frankie Goes to Hollywood; Pitchfork confirms he was enlisted for the new album.
Kele Okereke is framing the album as Bloc Party’s most directly autobiographical record. In press materials quoted by Pitchfork, he says, “Every lyric you’re hearing on this record was something that actually happened to me,” adding, “I had to tell the story, from start to finish.” Consequence quotes him going even further: “I don’t think I’ve ever been that candid in the past.” The story, according to Consequence, traces the separation from a long-time partner, the turmoil that followed, and the process of finding love again.
Coming on Strong is a smart first signal for that setup. It moves with a thumping pulse and a coiled guitar figure, more shadowy electro-rock than straight nostalgia play. Okereke describes it in Consequence as music that feels “dark, sinister, like something is creeping up,” and that is the lane Bloc Party tend to occupy best: desire as surveillance footage, romance as impact event, rhythm as the thing trying to keep the panic organized.
The new album also follows a period where Bloc Party have been living with their own mythology again, playing major shows around the 20th anniversary of Silent Alarm. That could have made a new record feel like an afterthought. Instead, Anatomy of a Brief Romance seems positioned as a personal reset, not just another post-anniversary lap.
Bloc Party are also set to support Muse on a July North American run with The Temper Trap, including dates in St. Louis, Tinley Park, Toronto, Mansfield, Holmdel, Wantagh, Columbia, and Camden. The full Anatomy of a Brief Romance tracklist is below.
