Arab Strap are celebrating 30 years the most Arab Strap way possible: by coming back with a song that turns malaise, bad knees, bad news, and late-capitalist dread into something oddly communal. The Scottish duo of Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton announced Half-Told Tales, due September 4 via Rock Action, and shared the new single “You You You.”

The album follows 2024’s I’m Totally Fine With It 👍 Don’t Give a Fuck Anymore 👍, a record that already sounded like the band had found a nasty little pocket between late-night confession and middle-aged disgust. Half-Told Tales appears to keep that nervous system intact while turning the pulse up. Pitchfork identifies the duo as Moffat and Middleton, and Rock Action’s Bandcamp listing describes Half-Told Tales as Arab Strap’s ninth studio album.

“You You You” is the immediate hook here. NME quotes the band calling it a “disco-metal incantation,” which is funny until the phrase starts to feel annoyingly accurate: the track moves with a dance-floor throb, but it still has that Arab Strap sourness around the edges. Moffat’s quoted explanation is less joke than survival strategy: “‘You You You’ is an attempt to remind ourselves, and hopefully others, that the world’s not full of awful people.”

The album runs 14 tracks: “I Get Noise,” “You You You,” “Be a Man,” “Fighting for You,” “Glamour Magick,” “Gape,” “Under Offer,” “Basic Physics,” “Sunsong,” “Dollar Park,” “Mr. Splitfoot,” “Ampersand,” “Fragments,” and “Beats per Minute.” That is a lot of room for a band whose best writing often sounds like someone muttering something devastating from the next barstool.

Arab Strap also mapped a 15-date UK and European run for October, November, and December. The dates start October 12 at Whelan’s in Dublin and wrap December 13 at Barezzi Festival in Parma.

The best Arab Strap songs usually make despair feel social rather than solitary. “You You You” gets there with a grin sharp enough to draw blood, and that is exactly where this band tends to be most useful.
